ARC Review: How Not To Die Alone

Release date: May 28, 2019

Genre: Fiction, Contemporary

Rating: 🌟🌟

“Up to that point I’d never realized that life, just sometimes, can be wonderfully, beautifully simple.”

Plot: This is a story about a man who is given a second chance at life and love as long as he exposes a little white lie that he told many years before….a little white lie that has grown into so much more.

Review: Special thanks to Netgalley and Penguin Group Putnam for the ARC. The ARC was given in exchange for an honest review.

This has got to be one of the strangest, uniquely set books that I have read in a long time. I do not recall ever reading a book where the majority of the it is set around an agency like this one.. It is both ludicrously morbid and spectacularly brilliant in one. Why? Because Andrew, the main character, has a job working for a government agency that requires him to sift through a dead person’s belongings to find any sort of next of kin. Since most of the dead are of the lonely sort, there is normally none and Andrew will then arrange the funeral. Although it is not part of his job description, Andrew often attends the funeral so the person is not entirely alone which is actually kinda sweet.

Andrew is also a lonely sort due to his past until he meets Peggy. Peggy makes his realize his loneliness and Andrew begins to see he needs to live his life instead of going through it with implicit numbness. I really enjoy being able to watch characters personally grow like Andrew does.

With all this said, I don’t know what to make of this novel. Although, the story itself is unique and humorous at times, it is extremely sad. Depressingly sad. And to top it all off, there were one too many times where I became extremely bored reading and ended up skimming most. I am a reader that needs / wants more entertainment and this severely lacked it.

Recommendation: You can pass on this one.

Book Blurb:

As a hit man for hire, Percivale is no stranger to violence.
From the moment he saw Blossom Jaymes through the window of her bakery, he knew he was in too deep. Not only was she as sweet as her perfectly crafted treats, but she was a soft-spoken, golden-haired angel that shone like a bright beacon in his dark world. And Percivale didn’t deal in angels. He dealt in death and crime. The even bigger issue? Percivale’s next hit is on said sweet little baker who doesn’t seem to realize how much danger lurks around her with each passing day.
If he doesn’t get the job done, who will?

When Percivale has to decide what’s more important to him—the life of a woman who may very well be innocent or getting his revenge on the men who murdered his family—the lines become blurred. Morals are twisted and a deathly chase ensues that can only result in one thing—Blossom buried six feet under.
Or can it?
Can Percivale let his lust for revenge go in order to save Blossom from the bounty on her head, or will the power she unknowingly holds over him be what gets her killed?

It started as a simple search for a landscape designer…

I wanted a beautiful backyard for my new home and my neighbors suggested I look into Ward Landscaping & Design.

The owner had no pictures of himself on his website, just a portfolio of nice outdoor sitting areas, pools, and vibrant gardens that I’d always dreamed of having.

Of course I hired him.

I expected to meet an average guy, but Mr. Marcel Ward is far from your average man. He’s handsome, and well-built, and his smile—though a rare trait—is truly infectious.
He’s every woman’s dream—a handsome, older man who doesn’t mind getting down and dirty to create something beautiful all because of his passion for it.

Unfortunately that lucky woman can’t be me.
Although Mr. Ward tests my limits, quickens my breath, and makes my heart skip a beat when he’s around, I’ve promised to devote myself to my husband.

So why am I falling for a man I know I can’t have?

What can you expect?

– An Alpha Hero (who is a bit of an asshole 😉 )
– Super Steamy Scenes
– An Adorable Beagle Puppy

“Let me know if you need anything, Marcel.”

“Sure will, Gabby.”

I grab the door handle, but not without noticing the smirk on his face.

When I close the doors, I can’t help sneaking a peek as I put my tea back in the fridge. Mr. Ward—Marcel—is standing with a shovel in hand. He stabs it into the ground, leaving it standing upright, and then he crosses one arm over the other, reaches down for the hem of his shirt, and pulls it up, right over his head.

With the sun beaming directly on him, of course he stands out. His tan skin is unmarked minus one long scar right below his right rib. He’s sculpted but not bulky, almost like he does just as much cardio as lifting to get his lean, toned appearance. His abs lead down to a sharp vee that disappears beneath his belt buckle and jeans. A few hairs jump out from beneath the buckle as he grabs the handle of the shovel.

As he snatches the shovel out, he pauses midway. My eyes travel up to find his, and it’s then I realize I’ve been staring. He narrows his eyes a bit, but a smug smile lightly tugs at the corners of his lips.

“Oh, shit!”

I back away, bumping into the nearest counter edge. When I hear one of the men yell something, I look again, glad Marcel has moved away from the windows of the doors to tend to the person. I hurry back upstairs, and this time I don’t look back, even though a small part of me is dying to see those abs one more time.

Teaser Post: Remember Me by Nelle L’Amour

REMEMBER ME by Nelle L’ Amour
Release Date: May 30, 2019

Add to Goodreads:

From USA Today bestseller Nelle L’Amour, a sizzling and suspenseful ripped from the headlines second chance romance like none other. What happens when the past, present, and future collide?

It was love at first sight with Finn. The downtown bad boy with the piercing blue eyes, tattooed biceps, and museum-worthy chiseled body. But while he struggled, I was driven. An investigative reporter determined to pursue the truth to get my story. My credo: Dig deep, then dig deeper. Then one time, I dug too deep and literally dug my own grave, losing everything and everyone dear to me.

Until life gave me a second chance.

Being a renowned artist and single dad isn’t easy. My demanding fiancée doesn’t help. No matter how much I try, she wants nothing to do with my precious five-year-old daughter.

Then she came along. The hot as sin teacher. Scarlet Callahan. She’s everything my fiancée isn’t. Warm, funny, and down-to-earth, she adores my daughter as much as my daughter adores her. I’m inexplicably attracted to her, but she keeps her distance. Like she’s hiding something. Except I’m going to uncover her secret even if it means risking everything I’ve ever wanted.

And everyone I’ve ever loved.

About the Author:
Guess what!? I was one of the co-creators and original producers of the TV series, Power Rangers. I oversaw the first one-hundred classic episodes, and I wrote/co-wrote many of them. I know…it’s hard to believe I went from kids’ shows to erotic romances, but I did. It’s a long story and if you meet me at a book signing, I’ll tell you everything.

So today, my alter-ego, Nelle L’Amour, is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author who lives in Los Angeles with her Prince Charming-ish husband, twin college-bound princesses, and a bevy of royal pain-in-the-butt pets. A former executive in both the entertainment and toy industrues with a prestigious Humanitas Prize for promoting human dignity and freedom to my credit, I gave up playing with Barbies a long time ago, but I still enjoy playing with toys with my hubby. While I write in my PJs, I love to get dressed up and pretend I’m Hollywood royalty. My steamy stories feature characters that will make you laugh, cry, and swoon and stay in your heart forever. And they’re often inspired by my past life.

Blog Tour: Something That Could Last (GIVEAWAY INCLUDED)

Release Promotion Something That Could Last.png

They say opposites attract. I never believed that until I met Abby.

I was an Ivy League student, the eldest son of an affluent family, living a life of luxury and rubbing elbows with D.C.’s elite. Sounds great, right? Too bad prestige comes with a price.

When the expectations became too much, I decided to escape to the hills of West Virginia with my best friend for a summer of fun, some R & R and a little white water rafting. I wanted to lose myself in the outdoors, but instead found Abby. A petite waitress and all around spitfire, she knocked me off my game, making me want more than the casual, no strings attached relationships I was used to.

To me, she’s not just another summer fling. She’s something that could last.

Ashley Exclusive Excerpt

“I’ve never seen you this protective over a girl before. What’s so special about this one?”

I grit my teeth. I don’t want to talk to Luke about this. He’s never once cared about a girl. Admittedly, I’ve never felt anything like what I feel for Abby, but I’m not a detached and unapologetic man-whore like he is, either.

“Forget it. You wouldn’t understand.” Seriously, I’m not talking to him about my feelings. No fucking way.

“Try me,” he challenges, all hint of teasing gone. The sincere look in his eyes stuns me and I cave.

“It’s just-” I start, but don’t really know what to say. “I care about her,” I finally admit. “She’s not just some hook-up. I want to keep seeing her. Even after we go back home.” Luke nods as though he understands. For some reason, it makes me want to keep going. “I have something real with her. Something that could last. And I want it. I want her. I don’t want anyone else to ever touch her again. To love her. Just me.”

Book Recommendations, Shameless Plugs

Spotlight: Autumn Jones Lake & The Lost Kings MC Series

Photo Credit / Copyright: Autumn Jones Lake

In the middle of the night roughly 2 years ago, I had just gotten my toddler back to sleep and was totally WIRED. So, I scrolled down my Amazon recommendations and saw a box set on sale called Road to Royalty (Lost Kings MC Box Set): Limited Edition Lost Kings MC Books #1 – #3. Now normally I would have probably just skipped right by it but the Book Gods and Goddesses were looking out for me that night and I immediately one-clicked it.

What I found was a little piece of motorcycle heaven wrapped in what is now almost 13 books. The Lost Kings MC Series is not like any other MC series I have read. It is the only one I have 100% devoured. It is the only one I am 100% loyal to as well. I simply fell in love.

What drew me in back on that fateful (just kidding) night was the main heroine of the series. I am Hope. I’m not a lawyer like she is but we are so similar in other ways, it is kind of eerie. I’m a little naive yet super smart. I have a positive outlook on life. Yet, I am also pretty damn fierce and can be a total momma bear when needed. You don’t mess with my people. Like Hope, I’ve never been on a motorcycle (it’s on the bucket list). I’ve never dreamed of a life in a MC unless that MC had Jax Teller or Opie Winston and I was living in Charming, CA. For the record, I still don’t but this series has provided such a wonderful outlet for my imagination….. I would happily enter the land of the Lost Kings especially if that meant I could have Rock or Z. 😉

Autumn makes ALL the characters feel so they could be your friends or your neighbors or even the random strangers you pass in the grocery store. Each character has their own unique back story. Each has overcome many obstacles to become the individuals that they are. Both male and female characters are built to be fierce as individuals which makes them even fiercer as a unit.

The Lost Kings are about love and family. They are supportive of each other. They protect each other. Their loyalty runs deep.

The series includes romance with really hot and steamy scenes; there is action, adventure, mystery and even some comedy. Autumn throws in twists and turns in every book. She, the little sneak, even likes to write in a few surprises that no one EVER sees coming (Readers know what I’m hinting at LOL).

You can start the series for free with Slow Burn: Click Here. I HIGHLY recommend it!!

Autumn Jones Lake is the one of the most lovable and charming authors I have ever had the pleasure of interacting with. I am a total fan. I adore her. I admire her. She treats her readers as family just like her MC characters. She frequents her Lost Kings MC Lounge often where she gives her readers new release information, sneak peaks, teasers, etc. A lot of times she pops in just to ask you about your day or to taunt you with cryptic messages after attending a writing conference. Her husband, RW Lake, connects with the group as well. He like to do giveaways and likes to join in on the conversations too. He’s so supportive of Autumn and her writing. It is really sweet.

As for the members of the Facebook group? They are some of the most non-judgmental, supportive and EXTREMELY fun individuals. They are my kind of people.

What Other Readers / LOKI FB Members are saying:

“The Lost Kings MC is my all-time favorite books series; I LOVE my LOKI! What’s not to love? Autumn is such a talented writer; the stories get better and better as time goes on. Lost Kings are classy-dirty with the perfect mix of humor, twists, love, action, hot sex (waggling my eyebrows) and so much more. She definitely keeps us readers on our toes, there is never a dull moment in the LOKI world. I am grateful for Autumn and her books. They have brought me so much joy and entertainment over the years. I am grateful for Mr. Lake for all he does for us readers by doing giveaways and supporting Autumn so she can give us these amazing stories. I was fortunate enough to meet the power couple at MMM19 and they are just as sweet, kind and interactive with the readers in person as they are in the LOKI reader group. Autumn puts a lot of hard work, love, detail and dedication into each and every book she writes. I hope this series NEVER ends! #RockisMYfox!” – Melissa M.

“The LOKI series is phenomenal, and it draws you in. It makes you feel as if you’re at the family dinners and are a part of the family. Autumn has done an amazing job of building this series and the characters in it that you honestly never want to put the books down.” – Tawni S.

“Autumn is the best blind “one-click” I have ever done and Autumn saved me. I fell in love with her LOKI family and never left it. Her books got me through cancer treatment, and still gets me through treatment now. The LOKI world means love, loyalty, family, strength, and the privilege of never wondering if someone has your back. This is a family by choice which keeps growing through each new book and I fall in love all over again. Autumn writes books where the men fiercely love their women and LOKI ladies are always looked out for through anything. Autumns says she created a world that she’d like to have but the truth is she gave us all a world to go to when life gets to be too much. I hope she never stops writing this series and I tell everyone to buy the whole series – they’ll never regret it.” – Kendis L.

New Release – Zero Regrets – Coming May 16

Zero Regrets, Lost Kings MC #13 is releasing on May 16. It is the conclusion to Angus “Zero or Z” Frazier’s book, Zero Tolerance. Update – May 14: It is now Part 2 of 3 books for Z!! We in the lounge have been counting down the days! No pressure, Autumn!

Book Reviews

Book Review: Eleanor and Gray

Genre: A Sweet Romance

Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Quote: “The best kind of love is the kind that fills one up completely, leaving reassurances, not doubts. You deserve that.”

Plot: He was him, I was me, and we were us. This was us. This was our story.

Review: Eleanor & Grey is such a beautiful, emotional, breathtaking story.

Although it is written as a romance, it is so much more. Eleanor and Grey is a testament to family, friendship and the ties that bind them together. It is a homage to mothers. It is a tribute to first loves. It is a story for those with broken hearts.

Eleanor and Grey’s love story is all sorts of magical. They are fated mates. They whimsically enter each other’s lives whenever an emotional support system is in need. Their relationship focuses on friendship and it focuses on healing each’s soul. And through all the emotions, through all of the grief, a beautiful love story shines through.

Brittainy C. Cherry, you are a marvelous writer….More of that, Brittainy….More of that 😉

Recommendation: A Must Read – however, may I suggest placing a box of tissues near as you dive it? You’re going to need them.
