β€œI am always surprised to discover that when the world seems darkest, there exists the greatest opportunity for light.”

Fall in love. Break the curse. That’s the first two lines of the synopsis for A Curse So Dark and Lonely. Sound familiar? Of course it does! A Curse So Dark and Lonely is a Beauty and the Beast retelling and I am ALL ABOUT IT.

This retelling has so many different takes on the characters and the curse and the outcome that it is both refreshing and totally enchanting. I could not put this book down.

The Main Characters

Prince Rhen of Emberfall, ever the arrogant and calculating prince (as he should be) has been cursed by a wicked, cruel enchantress. In order to break the curse, he needs to fall in love. However, there is just SO much more to the curse. Rhen’s curse alters from human form to beast form. The beast is a not the Disney version that is just one big grump. No….when Rhen transforms to the beast, he becomes cruel and deadly. I just LOVE Brigid’s dark and edgy take on the beast.

Brigid’s portrayal of Belle/Beauty is EVEN BETTER……Harper is a girl from our world with Celebral Palsy. That’s right….Harper has a disability – a slight limp – but she does not let that define who she is. She constantly lets others know that too. She is a fighter. A survivor. A fierce girl that opens both Rhen and Grey’s eyes.

Instead of talking clocks and candelabra’s, Rhen has one and only one remaining guardsman in Grey (you can take a guess at what happened to the others….). Grey is also the only one who can go into our world to bring back a girl for the Prince. He has been through it all along Rhen’s side. Grey is so noble and loyal. He’s protective and full of integrity. Fierce. Intense. Swoon-worthy. I could go on and on and on. Yes…I am crushing hard on Grey.

The Love Triangle????

There is a love triangle but it is subtle. Both men are attracted to Harper. But they do not let it interfere. There is a curse to be broken, Reader! There are priorities…..BUT, let me say that I am totally Team Grey and I will not apologize for it.

The Author

Brigid Kemmerer is the nicest person ever. I wrote her an email praising her work AND she responded pretty quickly. I didn’t even expect a reply. Her response was legit, too. It wasn’t just a sentence. She took her time replying. [Side note…..I don’t make a habit of writing authors but BK’s book was inspiring and I’m so OBSESSED with Beauty and the Beast that I couldn’t let the opportunity to pass by.]

A Curse So Dark and Lonely is an enchanting Beauty and the Beast retelling that is totally worth the read. The sequel A Heart So Fierce and Broken is coming in January of 2020 (I one-clicked that!) and it’s all about Grey (SWOON!).
